28 April 2024 · 5 min read
User experience (UX) is the difference between a visitor who converts and a visitor who clicks away. A well-designed WordPress website effortlessly guides visitors to the desired action. In this article we share UX optimisations that increase conversion.
At WP Maintainer we regularly analyse the UX of client websites and give improvement suggestions.
Page speed
Speed is the basis of good UX: - Loading time < 3 seconds - First Contentful Paint < 1.8s - Time to Interactive < 3.8s
Clear navigation
- Limit the number of menu items to 5-7 - Use clear, recognisable labels - Always show where the user is (breadcrumbs) - Ensure a working search function
Call-to-action (CTA)
- Use contrasting colours - Make CTAs large enough (min 44px high) - Place CTAs in logical places - Use active text ("Start free trial")
Readability
- Line length: 50-75 characters - Font size: minimum 16px on mobile - Contrast: sufficient contrast between text and background - Whitespace: enough space between elements
Building trust
- Show reviews and testimonials - Show trust badges (SSL, quality marks) - Show contact details prominently - Ensure a professional design
