Optimising internal link structure in WordPress
26 December 2024 · 7 min read
Internal links are the connections between pages on your own website. They are essential for both SEO and user-friendliness. A good internal link structure distributes link value, helps search engines understand your site and keeps visitors on your website longer.
At WP Maintainer we regularly install internal link structures for our clients. In this article we share our approach.
Why is internal linking important?
Best practices for internal linking
**1. Use descriptive anchor texts** Use relevant, descriptive text instead of "click here" or "read more". Good: "Read more about our WordPress maintenance plans" Bad: "Click here"
**2. Link to relevant content** Only link to pages that are truly relevant to the context. Random links confuse visitors and weaken the SEO effect.
**3. Use a logical structure** Organise your content in a hierarchy: Homepage ├── Category page │ ├── Subcategory │ │ └── Product/Article │ └── Article
**4. Link from deep pages to important pages** Pages deep in the structure (multiple clicks from the homepage) have less link value. Link to these pages from higher-placed pages.
**5. Use breadcrumbs** Breadcrumbs show the hierarchical location of a page and offer extra internal links.
