The history of WordPress: from blog tool to CMS giant

WordPress was launched in 2003 as a simple blog platform. In 20 years it has grown into the most used content management system in the world, with more than 43% of all websites. In this article we look back at the history and look ahead to the future.
2003: The birth
WordPress was created by Matt Mullenweg and Mike Little as a fork of the existing b2/cafelog. The first version (0.7) was a simple blog platform with basic functions for posts and comments.
2004-2005: Growth and themes
- WordPress 1.2 introduces plugins (2004) - WordPress 1.5 introduces themes (2005) - The beginning of the ecosystem that would make WordPress big
2008-2010: WordPress as CMS
- Custom post types and taxonomies - WordPress is used for more than just blogs - Market share grows to 10%+
2015: The REST API
WordPress 4.4 introduces the REST API, allowing WordPress to be used as a headless CMS. This opens the door for modern frontend technologies.
2018: Gutenberg
WordPress 5.0 introduces the Gutenberg block editor. A radical change from the classic editor, with mixed reactions but a clear vision for the future.
2024+: AI and the future
WordPress embraces AI integration, improved performance and the block-based theme system (Full Site Editing). The ecosystem keeps growing with more than 60,000 plugins.
