WooCommerce backups: strategy for webshops
29 November 2024 · 7 min read
A WooCommerce webshop runs 24/7 and continuously generates data: orders, customer registrations, stock changes and payments. A backup from yesterday is therefore not enough. You need a strategy that protects this continuous data flow.
At WP Maintainer we install advanced backup strategies for WooCommerce webshops. In this article we share our approach.
Why WooCommerce backups are different
A standard WordPress backup is not sufficient for a webshop: - **Orders come in continuously** — a backup from 12 hours ago may miss dozens of orders - **Stock changes in real time** — after a restore the stock may be incorrect - **Customer data is sensitive** — backups must be encrypted - **Payments are final** — a missed order = missed revenue
Backup frequency
For WooCommerce we recommend: | Data type | Frequency | Retention | |---|---|---| | Database | Every 4 hours | 30 days | | Files | Daily | 30 days | | For large shops | Real-time or every hour | 90 days |
What must be in the backup?
Backup solutions for WooCommerce
Restore testing
A backup you do not know works is worthless. Test monthly: 1. Restore on a staging environment 2. Check whether all orders are intact 3. Check product images and data 4. Test the checkout flow 5. Verify customer accounts
Disaster recovery procedure
Prepare a disaster recovery plan: 1. **Immediate action:** When do you start a restore? 2. **Communication:** How do you inform customers about data loss? 3. **Orders placed after backup:** How do you handle these? 4. **Stock correction:** How do you correct the stock after restore?
WP Maintainer WooCommerce backups
Our WooCommerce plan includes multiple backups per day with 30-day retention. We test the restore procedure monthly and continuously monitor whether backups are successful. On problems we restore within a few hours.
