5 signs your website has been hacked (before it is too late)

The biggest misconception about website hacks is that they are always visible. Defacements (when hackers replace your homepage with their own message) are rare. The most advanced hacks are precisely invisible. Hackers want to keep access unnoticed to send spam, spread malware or steal sensitive data.

At WP Maintainer we detect compromised websites daily. With our 20+ years of experience in web security we recognise the signs others miss. These 5 early warnings can help you discover a hack before the damage is irreparable.

Sign 1: Inexplicable slowness

If your website suddenly becomes noticeably slower, without you having made any changes, this may indicate a hack. Injected malware often runs background processes — such as sending spam or mining cryptocurrency — that consume your server resources.

Check the server load in your hosting panel. Do you see processes using extreme amounts of CPU or memory? That is a red flag.

Sign 2: Unknown admin users

Regularly check the user list in your WordPress dashboard. A hacker can create an administrator account with an inconspicuous name such as "wp_support", "update_user" or "admin2". Accounts with editor or administrator rights that you do not recognise are also suspicious.

Sign 3: Strange redirects

Are visitors — sometimes only from certain devices or locations — redirected to unknown websites? This is a classic hack symptom. Check your .htaccess file and look for unknown redirect rules. Some hackers specifically target mobile visitors or visitors from specific countries.

Sign 4: Warnings from Google

Google Search Console is your best friend when detecting problems. Watch for: - Sudden drops in search traffic - "Security Issues" notifications in Search Console - Warnings in search results ("This site may be harmful") - Unknown pages that are indexed

Check Search Console weekly. An early warning can save you weeks of recovery work.

Sign 5: Inexplicable traffic

A sudden spike in traffic — especially from unexpected countries such as Russia, China or India — can indicate a compromised website being used as a spam gateway or part of a botnet.
